Interdisciplinary Framework of the MA Program
The MA in Muslim Diaspora Studies offers an interdisciplinary framework for understanding the experiences, challenges, and contributions of Muslim communities worldwide. Structured around four key divisions — Migration & Diaspora Studies, Islam & Society, Politics & Law, and Media & Representation — the program equips students with analytical tools to explore global migration patterns, religious and social dynamics, legal and political frameworks, and the power of media in shaping perceptions. Together, these divisions provide a comprehensive foundation for studying Muslim diasporas in their historical, cultural, and contemporary contexts.
Migration & Diaspora
This division explores global and regional migration trends, demographic shifts, and refugee experiences. It examines how mobility shapes the lives, identities, and networks of Muslim communities, with a focus on historical trajectories and contemporary challenges of displacement and settlement.
Islam & Society
This division investigates the role of Islam in shaping diasporic life, from everyday religious practices to questions of identity, belonging, and interfaith relations. It provides students with tools to understand how religion interacts with social, cultural, and generational dynamics within diverse societies.
Politics & Law
This division analyzes the political and legal dimensions of Muslim diasporas, including participation in civic life, citizenship debates, minority rights, and legal frameworks governing religious diversity. It equips students to critically assess the intersections of law, politics, and community agency.
Media & Representation
This division examines how Muslim diasporas are represented in media, public discourse, and cultural narratives. Topics include Islamophobia, stereotyping, and the role of digital and traditional media in shaping perceptions, identities, and policy debates.
